Consumer Racial Profiling Focus Groups

The Center for Survey Research is working with Dr. Shaun Gabbidon, Distinguished Professor of Criminal Justice at Penn State Harrisburg  on a research project to conduct two focus groups. These groups will discuss African-American's experiences with consumer racial profiling (i.e. discrimination in a retail setting).  The focus groups will be held in Middletown, PA on the Penn State Harrisburg campus. See below for additional information and eligiblity requirements. 


What is a focus group?
A focus group is a discussion with 6 to 12 people who have similar experiences. The discussion is led by an experienced moderator who will pose questions to the group. The focus group usually lasts 1 to 2 hours.

Where are the focus groups being held?
Two focus group sessions will be held on the Penn State Harrisburg campus in Middletown, PA as part of this research project:

  • Tuesday, October 24, 2017 from 6-8pm
  • Wednesday, October 25, 2017 from 6-8-pm


Who is eligible to participate in the focus group?
In order to be considered for the focus groups, you must meet the following eligiblity requirements. 

  • You must be 18 years of age or older
  • You must identify as African-American
  • You must have experienced discrimination in a retail setting (i.e. consumer racial profiling) and be able to discuss your experience during the focus group

Why is the focus group being recorded?
We will be video recording the session to document the conversation and to get a good idea of what was said during the discussion. Only members of the research team will have access to the recording. 

Will I receive anything for participating in the focus group?
Registered participants will receive $75 and refreshments as a token of our appreciation.

You must provide ALL of the information listed below in order to be considered for participation.

  • Your name (first and last)
  • The date of the focus group you can attend (October 24 or October 25)
  • An email address and phone number to reach you
  • Your age
  • Briefly describe your discrimination experience in a retail setting and include when and where it occurred


The research team will review and select eligible individuals to participate in the focus groups to ensure we have a good mix of participants for each discussion. Individuals selected to participate will receive a confirmation with additional information including the exact location of the focus group discussion on campus. Space is limited to 12 people in each focus group, so contact us soon!
