Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC) Focus Groups

The Center for Survey Research is currently conducting several focus groups around the Commonwealth on behalf of PHMC. These focus groups will discuss decision-making and planning of leisure activities. The groups will also gather feedback from the local community on local museums and marketing efforts to encourage additional visitation to local museums. The focus groups will be held in the Scranton, PA area, the Pittsburgh, PA area, and the Harrisburg, PA area. See below for additional site information and eligiblity requirements. 

 

What is a focus group?
A focus group is a discussion with 6 to 10 people who have similar experiences. The discussion is led by an experienced moderator who will pose questions to the group. The focus group usually lasts 1 to 2 hours.

Where are the focus groups being held?
Three focus group sessions will be held as part of this research project:

  • SCRANTON AREA - ​Thursday, May 25, 2017 from 5:30 to 7:30pm at the Penn State Worthington Scranton campus in Dunmore, PA
  • PITTSBURGH AREA - Thursday, June 8, 2017 from 6 to 8pm at the Penn State Beaver campus in Monaca, PA
  • HARRISBURG AREA - Wednesday, June 14, 2017 from 6 to 8pm at the Penn State Harrisburg campus in Middletown, PA

 

Who is eligible to participate in the focus group?
In order to be considered for the focus groups, you must by 18 years of age or older and meet the following eligiblity requirements. 

SCRANTON AREA

  • You have NOT visited the Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum in Scranton, PA OR have not visited in a long time (i.e. you have not visited in 10+ years)

 

PITTSBURGH AREA

  • You have NOT visited Old Economy Village in Ambridge, PA OR have not visited in a long time (i.e. you have not visited in 10+ years)

 

HARRISBURG AREA

  • You have NOT visited the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg, PA OR have not visited in a long time (i.e. you have not visited in 10+ years)
  • Youn have NOT visited the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg, PA OR have not visited in a long time (i.e. you have not visited in 10+ years)
  • Please note that you do NOT have to meet BOTH of the above requirements for the Harrisburg, PA group. As long  as you meet ONE of them, you would be eligible to participate. 


Why is the focus group being recorded?
We will be video recording the session to document the conversation and to get a good idea of what was said during the discussion. Only members of the research team will have access to the recording. 
 

Will I receive anything for participating in the focus group?
Registered participants will receive $50 and refreshments as a token of our appreciation.

  • Your age

The research team will review and select eligible individuals to participate in the focus groups to ensure we have a good mix of participants for each discussion. Individuals selected to participate will receive a confirmation with additional information including the exact location of the focus group discussion on campus. Space is limited to 10 people in each focus group, so contact us soon!
