CSR Personnel
Dr. Auden Thomas, Director
Auden Thomas is the Director of the Center for Survey Research. She holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education with minors in Anthropology and Gender Studies from Indiana University Bloomington, a Master of Fine Arts degree from Temple University, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Penn State University. Prior to joining the Center for Survey Research, Dr. Thomas conducted survey administration activities and research at the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research and Planning.
As a complement to the operations of the Center, Dr. Thomas teaches a graduate course in survey research methods, supervises research interns, serves on thesis committees, and mentors and trains the CSR staff in the theory and practice of survey research. She is chair-elect of the University’s Commission for Women and former chair of the Commission's Assessment Committee. Dr. Thomas is a member of the
American Association for Public Opinion Research,the Association for the Study of Higher Education, and the History of Education Society.
Stephanie L. Hintz, Assistant Director
Stephanie L. Hintz is the Assistant Director of the Center for Survey Research. She holds a Master of Science in Administration of Justice from Shippensburg University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Administration of Justice and minor in Political Science from The Pennsylvania State University. Prior to joining the Center, Ms. Hintz conducted research for the Sociology Department at Penn State and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention at the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency.
Ms. Hintz has expertise in questionnaire design, web and telephone survey programming, and survey project management. In her role as Assistant Director, she is responsible for maintaining compliance with all Penn State Institutional Review Board policies and guidelines.
Ms. Hintz is a member of the American Association for Public Opinion Research. She has received graduate training through the Joint Program in Survey Methodology, the nation's oldest and largest program offering graduate training in the principles and practices of survey research.
Nicole L. Sturges, Project Coordinator
Nicole L. Sturges is the Project Coordinator of the Center for Survey Research. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Clarion University of Pennsylvania. She previously served as a Staffing Specialist for Manpower, Inc., and as a Research Assistant for the Capital Region Economic Development Corporation.
Ms. Sturges leads the Center’s focus group team. She has experience as a focus group moderator and assistant moderator, and has received focus group training with Dr. Dick Krueger.
Ms. Sturges has received graduate training in survey questionnaire design through the Joint Program in Survey Methodology at the University of Maryland and is a member of the American Association for Public Opinion Research and the American Evaluation Association.
Robert Isenberg, Field Operations Coordinator
Robert Isenberg is the Field Operations Coordinator for the Center for Survey Research. Rob holds his Master of Arts degree in Sociology from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
Mr. Isenberg trains and supervises interviewers at CSR's 20-seat telephone call center and statewide in face-to-face data collection efforts. He is a member of the American Association for Public Opinion Research.
Timothy Servinsky, Research Associate
Timothy Servinsky is a Research Associate for the Center for Survey Research. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from West Chester University of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining the Center, Mr. Servinsky was a founding member and editor for School of Thought, a peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary research e-journal.
Mr. Servinsky works on a variety of research activities including conducting literature reviews, coordinating face-to-face data collection efforts and supervising call center activities. He coordinates transcription services and serves as an assistant moderator for the Center's focus group team. He also has received focus group training with Dr. Dick Krueger.
Mr. Servinsky has lectured on the use of technology in research processes. His research interests include online communication patterns in gender and sexuality and the demonstration of power through nonverbal communication structures. He is a member of the American Association for Public Opinion Research and the American Evaluation Association.
Research Assistants
The Center for Survey Research employs approximately 40 part-time research assistants. All research assistants have completed Penn State's Social Science and Biomedical Institutional Review Board's web-based training program for the use of human participants. Research assistants conduct telephone interviewing using a computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) system, conduct on-site data collection, and assist with mail and online survey responsibilities.
